  • Our Story | Military Museum

Our Story Later that year, Warren began work with Rock County to renovate the vacated old historic county jail building and sheriff’s house, starting a project to completely gut the four floors and create a beautiful community space, art gallery and establish Rock County’s military museum. The museum opened in July 2009 after a total investment of $4.1 million. Today, the building houses two floors of the Brandenburg Prairie Foundation’s art gallery for acclaimed nature photographer Jim Brandenburg, a classmate of Warren’s, and is home to the Luverne Area Chamber & CVB whose staff manage the building. The building features the Herreid Military Museum. The museum fills the top two floors of the building. The exhibits tell the stories of Rock County men and women who have served this great country through the artifacts, photos, and stories donated for the displays. The Herreid Military Museum is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and on Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm. Warren G. Herreid II belongs to two long-time Rock County families. His father, uncles and grandfathers who served in WWI, WWII and Korea inspire a deep commitment to share the community’s rich military history. As a former executive in the healthcare industry, Jeannine M. Rivet is respected nationally for helping people live healthier lives and shares a commitment to family, veterans and community. In 2005, Warren and Jeannine created the K.A.H.R. Foundation, a family foundation for philanthropic endeavors. The letters of the foundation name stand for their surnames and their mother’s maiden surnames: Kahler, Archambault, Herreid and Rivet. In the early spring of 2007, they began work on their first major project in Rock County. The Rock County Veterans Memorial was designed and erected through the K.A.H.R. Foundation for the citizens of Rock County in the proud and grateful memory of her soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who laid down their lives in all quarters of the earth that other people might be freed from oppression. The memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day 2007.

  • WWII | Herreid Military Museum

WWII Pilot Quentin Aanenson On display in the museum are the uniform, flight jacket, helmet, goggles, and boots worn by WWII P-47 Pilot Quentin Aanenson. Aanenson’s auto-biographical account of his service during WWII was told in his film, “A Fighter Pilot’s Story”. Ken Burns discovered the film when researching WWII for his epic documentary – “THE WAR” – and selected Luverne as one of the four communities that were featured because of Aanenson’s well-told and documented film. Father Francis Sampson Featured in the museum are artifacts of Father Francis Sampson. Sampson served as a paratrooper priest during WWII, Korean War and Vietnam. The display shares the amazing story of his service to God and Nation including how he saved “Private Ryan” and the time he was captured and imprisoned in Stalag II-A. Sampson also served at the Chief of Army Chaplains. He is buried at St. Catherine’s Catholic Cemetery in Luverne alongside his mother. Captain Lenore Sandager See the uniform and read the story about Lt. Lenore Sandager. Sandager left Rock County to teach school. When war was declared, she answered the call to service and entered the Marines. While serving, she was tasked with developing the training protocol for the Navajo Code Talking program while stationed at Camp Pendleton.
